SPLYT

Overview

Splyt is an iOS app that allows split payments within a groups of people. It enables users to quickly send requests and payments. Whether it’s a restaurant tab, bills, rent, gifts etc, users are easily able to share the cost with their friends.

The Problem

When splitting the cost within group, people have used digital wallets like Zelle and Venmo to send or request payments. While this achieves the goal of sending cash back and forth, the experience still contains some friction:

1) When splitting the tab at restaurants, or sharing living costs with housemates (ie. rent, wifi, utilities), users still have to calculate the amount each person owes.

2)When receiving a pay request from someone, users only see the total amount and not the exact breakdown of where that amount came from.

RESEARCH

How People Splyt Costs

I conducted user interviews with a total of people to see how they usually split the bill when they’re out with friends at a restaurant. I also presented other cases such as splitting the cost of rent or utilities.

Some questions asked were:

“How do you split the bill when you eat out with your friends?”

“How do people pay you back if/when you cover the bill?”

Cost are usually distributed and paid in one of 1 of 3 ways:

  1. Send a Venmo request to each person

  2. Their friends send them Venmo payments

  3. Cash

How might we improve the process of sharing costs with friends?

IDEATION & BRAINSTORMING

Determining Cost Breakdown: Who Paid What?

During the research, everybody that was interviewed still had to calculate how much each person owed when splitting a bill.

How might we reduce friction when it’s time to pay?

In order to answer this, I set some goals that the app needed to achieve:

  1. Allow users to split cost equally

  2. Allow users to customize how much each person owes

  3. Input numbers with no calculation involved

USABILITY TESTING

Testing The Concept

After conducting a usability test with 5 participants, I received a lot of feedback on the app’s ability to customize the amounts.

“What if I ordered more than one item?”

“What if I shared an order with someone”

"What if someone paid in cash?”

Based on these findings I made some iterations to my original designs.

Final Insights

For this project, I really focused on the user’s current experience of their cost-splitting methods. I made sure that people were able to split costs equally vs. custom. I wanted the experience to be smooth so that all the user had to do was look at the bill and input the correct amounts for each person. These features, along with the ability to split the cost of individual items creates a more seamless experience when it comes to sharing a bill with friends. If I had more time, I would definitely do another round of testing as well as design the experience of Splyt being integrated with other apps.
